A big thanks for all the cards and packages during mail call! Those really mean a lot and remind me of how blessed I am to have you in my life. I had my first visit to sick call yesterday morning for a sinus infection I couldn't shake...I've heard that some of you battle with these on occasion. Sorry about that! Ouch!!! The doctor gave antibiotics and some decongestant and I think they are beginning to do their job.
The worst part of PT in the mornings is not the Drill SGT or the early morning formation but the pesky ants that call Ft. Jackson home. No matter where you go there are ants. If you sit down, they crawl up your pants. If you drive, they crawl around the interior of your car. If you pick up your canteen, you have to shake them off before you drink. The bites remind me of a mosquito and itch like crazy!!
We've been doing pull-ups and mountain climbers in the mornings and I'm very sore as a result. I'm a big guy and struggle to complete the pull-ups...I remember junior high when I would just hang on the bar like a chubby kid clinging to a cliff. We were disciplined on Thursday because someone thought it would be funny to leave a box of Bojangles Chicken on the Drill SGT's exercise platform. At the end of the day he made us do 180 (four count) overhead arm claps. Golly, that hurt!
Last night our platoon met to go to "The Three Little Pigs." A well known BBQ joint close to post. To be honest, I felt a little sick looking at all that fried food and a complete pig with snout next to my table as I ate. I know my wife would have enjoyed the fried okra :) I've been bonding with a few guys down here that are high quality, Godly men, who love their wives and kids and are excited to pin the cross on with me someday. 2LT Bob Davis is a Nazarene pastor in Oklahoma and has three kids. 2LT Scotty Sewell is a Baptist pastor in TN and has two kids. Both have been married well over 10 years and are good role models for how to love their wives. Good men...
This weekend is all about writing papers! It seems that this phase of training is primarily "death by PowerPoint" where we learn the skill sets necessary to serve as a Battalion chaplain. We've studied suicide prevention, lawful warfare, evil in war, conscientious objectors, crisis counseling, ethics, army values...etc...
Much love to everyone and a big Happy Birthday to Smith Nagel! Love you young man!
